How to Choose the Right E-Reader with Dark Mode
Prioritize Screen Size for Portability
Screen size determines how portable your device is. The 6-inch models, such as the Kobo Clara BW, measure roughly 6.26 inches in length. This compact form factor fits easily into small bags or pockets. If you prefer a larger canvas for text, consider the 7-inch Kobo Libra Colour. It measures 6.34 inches long. Larger screens offer more text per page but reduce portability. Decide if you value pocketability or reading comfort above all else when selecting the physical dimensions.
Select Black and White or Color
Choose your display type based on the content you read most. Black and white E Ink screens, like those on the Kobo Clara BW, provide high contrast for text-heavy novels. Color E Ink displays, found on the Kobo Libra Colour, are essential for comics, graphic novels, and illustrated books. Color models may have slightly different refresh rates. If you only read standard fiction, a monochrome screen is sufficient. If you enjoy visual media, ensure the device supports color E Ink technology for accurate shading.
Check Storage Capacity Needs
Storage capacity affects how many books you can keep offline. The Kobo Clara BW models typically include 16GB of storage. This is ample for thousands of text-based ebooks. The ZIZEV 5.76-inch model offers 32GB of storage. This extra space suits readers who download many audiobooks or large graphic novels. Check the listed storage specs before buying. If you stream audiobooks or rely on cloud libraries, less local storage may be acceptable. For offline archives, prioritize higher GB counts.
Verify Waterproofing for Bath Use
Waterproofing allows you to read in the bath or by the pool without worry. Most Kobo models in this list, including the Clara and Libra series, feature waterproof construction. This protects the internal electronics from accidental splashes or submersion. The ZIZEV model does not explicitly list waterproofing in its attributes. If you plan to read in wet environments, ensure the specifications confirm IPX8 or similar ratings. This feature adds durability and peace of mind for casual reading in various locations.
Consider Physical Buttons for Navigation
Physical page-turn buttons offer tactile feedback without touching the screen. The Kobo Libra Colour series includes dedicated physical buttons on the side. This is helpful for reading one-handed or when your hands are wet. Touchscreen-only models, like the standard Kobo Clara BW, require finger taps. Touch screens are precise but may not suit everyone. If you prefer a traditional book feel, look for models with hardware buttons. This feature enhances comfort during long reading sessions by reducing screen interaction.
