How to choose the right one
Check screen size needs
Decide between portability and reading comfort. The Kobo Clara BW offers a 6-inch display that fits easily in small bags. It measures 6.26 inches in length and weighs 6.14 ounces. This size is ideal for travel. If you prefer larger text or graphic novels, look at the 7-inch models. The Kobo Libra Colour provides a bigger canvas for detailed images. Consider how you hold the device. A larger screen may feel heavier during long sessions. Choose the size that matches your daily reading habits.
Decide on color display
Determine if you read comics or graphic novels. Black-and-white models like the Kobo Clara BW are sufficient for standard text. They often offer sharper contrast for prose. Color E Ink displays, found in the Libra Colour, bring illustrations to life. The Kobo Clara Colour also offers vibrant visuals in a compact form. Color screens consume more power than monochrome ones. If you mostly read novels, stick to black-and-white. If you enjoy manga or technical diagrams, prioritize color. Check the display type in the specifications before buying.
Evaluate storage capacity
Ensure the device holds your entire library. The Kobo Clara BW includes 16GB of storage. This space handles thousands of books and some audiobooks. The PocketBook InkPad Color 3 offers 32GB. This extra space suits users with large collections or those who store audiobooks locally. Consider if you stream content or download files. More storage reduces the need for frequent management. Check the listed storage in the attributes. If you plan to keep many files offline, choose the higher capacity option for long-term convenience.
Look for audiobook support
Check if the device plays audio files. Many waterproof models include audiobook features. The Kobo Clara BW supports audiobooks via Bluetooth. The PocketBook Era Color also lists Bluetooth connectivity. This allows you to listen without a phone. Verify the presence of Bluetooth in the specs. Some models may lack this feature. If you want to switch between reading and listening, ensure the device supports both. This adds versatility to your reading routine. It is especially useful during commutes or chores.
Consider physical buttons
Decide if you prefer touch or physical controls. The Kobo Libra Colour features physical page-turn buttons. These are easier to use with wet hands or while wearing gloves. Touchscreen models require dry, clean fingers. The Kobo Clara BW relies on touch input. Physical buttons offer tactile feedback and reduce accidental taps. If you read in the bath, buttons may be more reliable. Check the product description for button presence. This feature enhances usability in wet environments where screens might be slippery.
Verify waterproof rating
Confirm the device is rated for water exposure. All listed models are described as waterproof. This protects against splashes, baths, and rain. Look for specific ratings like IPX8 if available. This ensures safety in various wet conditions. Do not submerge devices not rated for it. Check the features section for waterproof claims. This protection extends the device lifespan near pools or beaches. It allows worry-free reading in humid environments. Ensure you follow the manufacturer guidelines for water resistance.
